Knowledge Base Article - Instructions for Saving Your File
Autodesk / Maya
To generate a .STL file in Alias Studio Use the STL export function.
- After finishing modeling the normals of each surface have to be set pointing away from the object
- Stitching into one entity with setting: keep originals; the order of picking surfaces may have an impact on the stitch-ability
- No yellow lines (gaps) are a necessity
- Export active as .STL: The export STL setting window offers two parameters to adjust, tessellation tolerance and merge vertices tolerance. Tessellation tolerance: setting is dependent on geometry, the smaller the number, the finer the tessellation and the bigger the file.
Merge vertices tolerance: set it at 0.0004
- Finally, click on the accept button in the lower right and save the .STL file
o Simple or small CAD files create .stl files that may be around 500 KB in size.
o Complex models with best quality .stl files may range from 4-12MB in size.
- Open and review the file in Solid View or similar third party viewer. Compare to the images. Save when comparable to BEST.
- Zip up files for transfer, Upload to Planet Proto.
